Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

- Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., FACS, Director, Cardiovascular Institute, Columbia Medical Center, NYC ABC News, Good Morning America: December 15, 2008

Dental Lasers Safely Kill Bacteria

At Newport Family Dental Care in Newport, TN, our dentists practice laser dentistry to treat gum disease. This approach kills bacteria without harming the teeth. Laser dentistry is painless and highly effective.

Laser Dentistry in Johnson City and East Tennessee

A) Pocket Measurement. The first step of the laser treatment involves measuring the depths of your periodontal pockets in millimeter increments with a small ruler. This tells Dr. David Sutton how much loss of attachment has occurred.

B) Bacteria Removal. Pulsed light laser is passed over the area to remove diseased tissue and kill bacteria that are causing gum disease. Healthy tissue remains untouched, making this a more comfortable process for the patient.

C) Calculus Removal. Calculus, or tartar, is removed from the root surfaces of the teeth using ultrasonic scaling instruments.

D) Clot Forms. The laser is passed over the treated area a second time to stimulate the tissue, root, and bone so that a clot forms and triggers the healing process.

E) Tissue Compressed. The tissue is recompressed against the surfaces of the teeth without any stitches needed.

F) Bite Adjustment. Dr. Sutton will need to adjust your bite so that there is no trauma to your teeth. This is even more important for areas with bone loss.

LANAP® allows us to save problematic teeth that would otherwise have to be surgically removed. It can counteract the effects of bone loss and also support healthy tissue regeneration. If you have periodontal disease and do not want to deal with the pain and gum recession associated with traditional gum surgery, talk with Dr. Sutton about laser surgery for treating periodontal disease.

Set up your consultation for laser dentistry in Newport, TN with Dr. Sutton today! He can determine whether you are a good candidate for periodontal disease treatment with LANAP® and create a treatment plan that will restore your oral health.
